Clinic No-Show Rate Benchmarks by Specialty

Benchmarks are useful for orientation and dangerous as targets. The published ranges below are consistent with peer-reviewed literature and large-sample operational reports — but your own baseline matters more than any external average.

Reminders notify everyone. NoShowFlow shows who actually needs attention.

Typical reported ranges

  • Primary care / family medicine: 5–15%
  • Dental: 8–15%
  • Dermatology: 8–15%
  • Physiotherapy / rehab: 10–20%
  • Mental and behavioral health: 15–30%+
  • Specialty outpatient (mixed): 10–20%

Why benchmarks mislead

Reported rates depend on how a clinic defines a no-show, whether late cancellations are included, and whether new-patient intakes are separated from returning visits. A clinic running "8%" by one definition may be running "16%" by another.

What to measure on your own schedule

  • No-show rate by appointment type and provider
  • No-show rate vs. lead time bucket (0–7, 8–30, 31+ days)
  • Same-day cancellation rate (often hidden in "no-show" totals)
  • Recoverable share — the portion that responded to outreach

How NoShowFlow reports it

Each analysis returns your own rate broken down by the dimensions above, alongside the ranked outreach list. The benchmark is context; your own trend is the metric that belongs on the operations dashboard.
